Stream Smoothly

Asus RT-AX-88U Wireless Router

If you have the fastest NBN but experience choppy video when watching wirelessly, the issue may not be with the NBN modem, which typically cannot be changed, but rather with the router provided by your telecom company. The standard router included in NBN bundles is quite basic and may only handle one Full HD stream wirelessly in a direct line of sight, or two via a Network LAN cable.

A router functions like a mini-computer that manages your internet traffic. A basic router, like the one provided by your telecom, may struggle with multiple streams of data (video/sound information). If multiple household members are watching different content simultaneously, it can overload the router. Additionally, interference from other devices that share the same Wi-Fi frequency (2.4GHz), such as microwaves and mobile phones, can disrupt your wireless stream.

To ensure a smooth streaming experience, a high-quality wireless adapter/dongle system is recommended, along with a robust router. Modern routers can handle multiple data streams simultaneously, thanks to technologies like OFDMA and MU-MIMO. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest Wi-Fi protocol, offering up to four times greater network capacity and efficiency in dense traffic environments compared to the previous generation Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which can only manage one device at a time on each network channel. Wi-Fi 6’s OFDMA support divides each channel into small sub-channels, allowing signals from multiple devices to be bundled and transmitted simultaneously, reducing latency and providing a smoother, more responsive Wi-Fi experience.
*Please note that while Wi-Fi 6 supports multiple devices, the actual performance will vary based on the specific router and its capabilities.
